SHINee on the OTW - January 2023 - SHINee Rebanded
Welcome to SHINee on the OTW! An event that takes place over one week each month to take a look at the history of SHINee in fandom history!
From December 30-January 6, we have a handful of things going on!
This week, we'll be taking a closer look at the SHINee Rebanded fest - a cancelled 2020 almost-event focusing on SHINee and the Alternate Universe - No Band tag!
Mod Flame - our resident journalist moderator - will be interviewing the original creator to get some more information, future plans and backstory for the fest! If you have any questions you'd like to ask the creator, please either comment them here or send them over to our Retrospring! All questions must be in by January 3rd to be included in the interview.
We'll be posting the interview on January 4th so be sure to check back for the interview!
As part of our OTW Challenge aspect of our SHINee on the OTW Event, we are inviting AO3 Authorwols to take on a small challenge!
In collaboration with the fest, we already know that SHINee Rebanded was originally created to increase the amount of fics using both the SHINee tag and the "Alternate Universe - No Band" tag - did you know, as of December 2022 only thirteen fics use these two tags?
We are challenging you to an OTWrangle Challenge!
Tags such as Alternate Universe - Royalty, Alternate Universe - Vampire and co don't actually auto format under the "No Band" tag on AO3 as there's no way to discern what is and isn't a No Band fic via the tagging system.
With this in mind, and with SHINee Rebanded's theme, we'd like to challenge you guys to add the "Alternate Universe - No Band" tag to your SHINee fics that fit the tag (and give the creator a pleasant surprise two years after their almost-fest!).
We will share all fics that take this challenge on - remember, tags on AO3 are used for organisation and filtering and allows more people to find fics that fit the specifics they're looking for.
We will only be sharing, however, fics with the tag as part of the challenge! All works that add the tag to an existing work will be added to the collection bookmarks for this month's event!
Alternatively, you can try and write an "Alternate Universe - No Band" fic in 2,000 words or less for an extra challenge! Once you've written your work, you can add it to the event collection here!
You can also QRT this tweet with your work and the Twitter page will retweet and share your work!
The rest of the week, we'll also be looking at the history of "Alternate Universe - No Band" as it pertains to SHINee but also as it pertains to fandom as a whole, how the theme was popularised and more! We'll be doing a small fic rec and a mini writing challenge as well!

OTWrangling Challenge
For the OTWrangle challenge, they asked creators to add the Alternate Universe - No Band tag to their already existing works for a number of reasons:
- With our fest focus this week, the SHINee Rebanded fest had the active goal of increasing the No Band tags on the site. This is part of our event as a way to give the creator a small surprise that their fest - whether remaining cancelled or ongoing (to be found out in our interview on Jan 4!) - still had an impact on the fandom. Fic fest creators work tirelessly to increase fandom content and this is partly our way of giving back to the creator’s hard work no matter where that hard work ended
- “Alternate Universe - XX” does not necessarily filter under No Band. A Royal AU is - most commonly - focused on SHINee as a non k-pop group, however, some writers will use a Royal AU to look at SHINee as a K-Pop group. It makes things a bit more filtered and organised for readers and other authors to enhance and further describe their works using the tags.
- Increasing the amount of tags tells readers if that Vampire AU is focusing on SHINee as a k-pop idol group as vampires or in a totally different universe! It allows for potentially more readers to your fic!
- It actively helps the Archive, other OTW projects and our OTWols! AO3 uses tags to organise and filter. For instance, if you have the tag “No SHINee” but not No Band, adding “No Band” can allow the AO3 to update the tags, meaning anything with “No SHINee” will auto filter under the No Band tag.
- It helps our OTWols to add more info to the SHINee Fanlore page. It allows us to track and update SHINee history on the Fanlore to the most (and least) popular trends over time.
- We will be sharing all fics that add the tag giving you a little bit of promotion for your fics!
- Some fic fest have said using the data driven by the OTWrangle Challenges will allow them to create more fandom-driven events. For instance, Taemythos - the Taemin-centric mythology focused fic fest - have said if they had more coherent data on what is more popular they can make events for that and events to challenge the least popular statistics - using an example if vampire!SHINee as a kpop group is more popular, they can create events focused on vampire!SHINee as a non k-pop group and such!
All in all, it helps many different facets of people including readers, authors, the Archive itself and can even get you a special fic fest round!
The OTWriting Challenge
Our challenge is simple: simply write a Alternate Universe - No Band work for SHINee and post it with the tag!
The rules are keep your works to 2,000 words or below and it must be SHINee/SHINee!
If you want to use the themes of the Rebanded fest, this is totally fine! This is not necessary to take part, however! The fest's themes were
Medical AU, Battle/War AU, Police/Detectives AU/Radio AU
Make sure to use the correct AU tag upon posting!
